April 2010 Book:The Quarry

The Quarry
Damon Galgut
From the publisher:
On a lonely stretch of road a man picks up a hitchhiker. The driver is a minister on his way to a new congregation in an isolated village and the passenger is a nameless fugitive from justice. When the minister realizes this and confronts his passenger as they are overlooking an empty quarry, the fugitive kills him and assumes his vestments and identity…”

  2. Forget the synopsis, this book has very little to do with plot or characters. It’s all about mood and tone (think Beckett or a Twilight Zone episode). He uses the least amount of words possible to create a desolate, weather-worn, eerie landscape. The best word I can think of to describe this book is cool.

  3. Put you thinking caps on. How many ways can you interpret the title The Quarry???

  4. I think it hit me on page 120 that I should look up the definitions of quarry. Then I applied them to the book, which helped make some sense of the last pages of the book. Look forward to hearing everyone's input on Thurs.

  5. It's doubtful I would have read this novel had it not been one of the selections and I'm glad I've had the chance to read it. An interesting, odd and compelling read!

  6. AHLEBC met on Thursday 29th April to discuss this book. Most members really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others. The writing by Damon Galgut is very unusual and clever and really added momentun and flavor to the book.
