The Shack by WM. Paul Young

The Shack Is a story about Mack, a man whose daughter is kidnapped and brutally murdered. A few years after her murder, Mack receives an invitation from God to meet Him at the shack where they found his daughter's bloody clothes. Mack goes and works through the meaning of suffering as he spends the weekend with the Trinity, uniquely portrayed (God the Father is a large black woman, for instance).

  1. I can appreciate the loss and re-discovery of faith after suffering a life altering tragedy. I can appreciate what the shack represents. I appreciate the idea of the book as a whole.

What I don't appreciate is the writing, which I didn't like and found the tone be at times patronizing/condescending and even insulting. Overall, the story didn't work for me.

The fact that “interest in making it into a move” is mentioned at least twice in the last pages at the back of the book as well as on the book’s site screams farce (to me) makes me think that this poorly written and put together novel was only done so in an attempt to get a movie script read and produced.

Despite all of this, I can see why others did like it.

Personally I feel that religion, spirituality and a relationship with God is very different for each and every individual in this world, regardless of what specific religion you are, and as with anything else in life, (like the books we read) what works for one may not work for all and that's perfectly okay to me! To each her or his own.

  2. What a Great discussion last night!

Thank you to Doris for all of the work you put into it before hand, you did a great job facilitating! (And thank you to Lori for helping Doris!)

Thank you DeAnn for helping me to clarify how I felt about the overall writing & flow of this novel with mentioning that it having been written over a period of 11 years could make it seem "disjointed." I agree with that possibility & that term summed it up perfectly for me as well.

Again, another novel I would not have read if not for this bookclub and though I didn't personally like it, I am glad to have read it and participated in the discussion.

Hope to see all of you next month when I facilitate The Help by Kathryn Stockett!
